November Newsletter

I know, I know, I barely made it. But, technically, it is still November! Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. The last session was fantastic! We welcomed lots of new brothers and sisters, and had three awesome grad shows. I have some pics below and more to come. I will definitely do another newsletter in December (I had planned to just do one Holiday newsletter) because there is a lot going on in January, and I want to get all the info to you. Hope to see you all soon!

As always, any items you have for the newsletter can be sent to

They will continue to do the show there every Friday night. To get booked at La Casa from now on, email Derrick at and tell him you are in my family. He'll treat you really well.

If you haven't noticed yet, I have added a list called "Family Credits" to the right side of this blog (under the list of family members). Is your credit listed? If not, please let me know so that I may add it to the list of family accomplishments. You are all doing so much, it's hard to keep up with it all!

Rawle Lewis Wins at Harlem Film Festival!

Hooray for Rawle!

Rawle writes:
So we are back from New York. I am proud to announce that "Poet Heads" has won Best Mockumentary Film @ Harlem International Film Festival. We would like to take time out to THANK all those people who have supported us, thus far. The independent film making process is by no means an easy task. So needles to say, your kindness has not gone unnoticed.
This is only the beginning for "Poet Heads" and hopefully we can all enjoy the rise to the top together. Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Yak Wins The Truth! Tom takes 3rd!

Congrats Yak Manrique and Tom Vrab!

Yak writes:
The first round was on a Thursday at Harleys in San Bernardino. The room is run by Flow. He is an awesome guy and is always trying to help the comedy game in anyway possible.

Out of the 30 or 40 people, 7 were picked to go to the final round on Saturday at Incahoots in Riverside. (Incahoots...really cool spot! get in now before it blows up and then u gotta claw ur way in!)

I got lucky and went last. and to my surprise....I won! 150 bucks!! Just enough to pay my cell phone bill! haha!

Tom Vrab won third!
He had an awesome set as always. All the comics did good, and I give all the credit to Flow for putting the show and competition together.

Ryan won Uncle Clyde's on October 18th. He won the $500 and the week long paid gig in the Ice House main room, plus entrance into the Detroit International Comedy Festival January 20-26. This follows Ryan's recent Comedy Idol win. Congrats Ryan!

Arlene Nicoletti-Legal Plan

Arlene writes:

I want to let everyone in on something that worked for me so I know it can work for you. Earlier this year I quit a job and the employer failed to pay me for one week that was owed to me. When I repeatedly called them I was given the runaround. This went on for months. I got fed up and joined a pre-paid legal plan for $26 dollars a month. I called a lawyer the first week I joined with the toll-free number who wrote them a letter stating that they had violated state laws and now owed far more then a weeks pay and that I would pursue this until there was a resolution. I was contacted by the employer who then rushed me a check for ten times what they originally owed me.

In addition to 24/7 access to lawyers, for $9.95 more you get 100% identity theft coverage, and they do all the work for you. A total of $35.90 a month is better then paying out major legal fees. Without the plan, a consultation alone with a lawyer is around $100.

Whether you choose just the legal plan or both it worked for me, and if you believe it’s something you would like for yourself. Please email me or call my voice mail at (818) 754-8679.

Doo Dah Parade Delayed This Year

The Doo Dah Parade is not going to take place November 18 afterall. Thanks to Paula Johnson for sending me this newsclip:

"Saying the event's 'momentum' has grown to the point where extra planning time was advisable, Doo-Dah Parade organizers announced yesterday the irreverent Rose Parade spoof will step off at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, January 20th, 2008 instead of its usual November date."

We still plan to do it, so let me know if you want to march with us. It's so fun (and only $10 per person)!

Julia Flint-Cast This!

Julia Flint produces Internet Sitcom-Cast This!

About Julia:
"I've been an actress in Los Angeles since October of 2000. I started producing my own work in 2004, mostly in the form of short films created for a contest called the 48-Hour Film Challenge (where you write, shoot and edit a movie in two days). A couple of these films were award-winners, and one of them was re-edited and submitted (and accepted) to a number of festivals. You can see the short films on Diva D Productions' website (

Cast This! ( originally began as a short film, but then it jumped out at me as having the potential to be a sitcom -- complete with wacky characters, crazy story lines, and my own subtle sense of humor."

Cast This!, an internet-based sitcom, premieres on a browser near you…

Burbank, CA - May, 3 2007 - Diva D Productions announces the launch of their internet-based sitcom, Cast This! With new three-minute webisodes airing on the internet every Tuesday and Thursday morning, this “webcom” captures the chaos of a busy casting office as the owner and her assistant try to cast movies from the very bottom run of the casting ladder. Along the way, they audition a series of wacky characters, all trying to make it big in Tinseltown.

Julia Flint, Executive Producer, writer and the creator of the series, says "Coming from a background where I saw both sides of the room {the casting side and the acting side}, I found it amusing how each side perceives things so differently. I tried to capture the essence of what we go through as actors, while also writing the perspective of the casting director."

The idea for Cast This! started as a short film in 2005 -- Flint liked the concept of a series, so she re-cut the short film into a 10-minute pilot presentation. "I started to put together my pitch package and thought better of it -- why not produce the series myself and put it up on the internet?" And so the process of finding resources began. "I had worked with Brian (Wasiak, the director) before on other short films, so I pitched the project to him. He immediately jumped on board. Then I called Joe” (Joseph Setele, cinematographer -- he and Wasiak had worked together on several of Flint's other projects), “and the next thing you know, we were planning our shoot dates. Of course, that meant I had to start writing," she says, laughing.

The 10-minute pilot aired the last two weeks of April. Episode 101, "The Death Threat," begins airing on May 8th. Each storyline is about 30 minutes long -- cut into 8 to 10 three-minute pieces, the entire episode airs over the period of a month. “The webisodes are easy to watch,” says Flint, “for about the time it takes to read a long e-mail, you can watch Cast This! -- and it's easy to pick up where you left off.” Every webisode is available to watch after it first airs. There is an e-newsletter that reminds viewers when a new webisode is available.

To see the series, tune your browser to

Diva D Productions was formed in 2004 as the creative outlet of its founder, Julia Flint, who found that she liked to make short films with no budget in a limited timeframe. Under the 48 Hour Film Project (a contest where teams write, shoot and edit a movie in two days), Diva D Productions has now created seven short films. Of them, "Valley PD Blue" was voted one of the Top Ten in LA and winner of an award for "best character," and "The Amoeba" was re-edited into a longer version that has been an official selection in several film festivals. The latest success in Diva D Productions' story is Cast This!, a sitcom "webisodic" that follows the day-to-day adventures of a casting office.
